Patchwork Pier

The sea, in squares.

A long fishing pier over a patchwork sea, vintage bathers spread across the sand, a red roof on the pier house at the far end. Modernist flat illustration.

The Story

For a hundred years the long piers of the Palm Beach coast have been the town's front porch - a red-roofed pier house at the end, a rail lined with anglers and strollers, and below, the real gathering: bathers spread across the sand in bright suits, towels down, the whole morning claimed. The water off this coast runs in patches, deep channel blue beside pale shoal green, shifting with the bottom and the light. The piece lays the sea out the way it actually reads from the rail - as a patchwork, tile after tile of teal, stitched through with lines of white foam.

The Making

  • The sea is rebuilt as a patchwork - flat rectangles of teal, aqua, and deep blue laid edge to edge, with white foam bands running across the joins like stitching.
  • The sky gets the same treatment in larger, quieter pieces - pale planes angled like cut paper behind the red roof of the pier house.
  • The bathers stay small and simple - flat shapes in period swimwear scattered along the deck and the sand, so the geometry does the talking.
