Twenty-One Suns

Twenty-one suns, one pier.

The municipal fishing pier at Lake Worth Beach on a long diagonal over scallop-row seas, under a graded field of twenty-one sun discs. Minimal geometry.

The Story

The municipal pier at Lake Worth Beach runs from the dune crossover out over the surf zone, pavilion at the far end, anglers along the rails from first light. On a calm morning the Atlantic flattens into repeating scallop rows, each row a single semicircle deep, and the sun comes up in hard graded steps. The composition keeps the two systems separate: the engineered diagonal of deck, rail, and piling above, the sea's own repeating module below.

The Making

  • Composed in Illustrator on a strict module grid - the sea built from one semicircle unit repeated in offset rows, seven tonal steps from deep teal to pale aqua; the sun field a dot matrix of twenty-one discs in three graded rows, gold through orange to coral, on a flat cream ground.
  • The pier is drawn as flat vector shapes on a single diagonal, pilings and reflections held to the vertical grid.
  • Palette limited to eight flat colors, no gradients inside the forms.
  • Print-prepped in Photoshop at 2400 × 3000 px, 300 dpi, sRGB, 0.25-inch safe area.
  • --- *Version 3 - stories and process lines rewritten Oct 30, 2026 per Matt's direction: restrained, observational stories about the place; technical, construction-level process copy.
  • Names and mottos unchanged from v1/v2.*
